Markham Hislop, Publisher/Editor of the Beacon: Markham began his journalism career writing columns in the mid-1980s for Western People Magazine, then reported for a small Saskatchewan daily. He has spent most of his career in media and communications, likes to dabble in politics, thinks that what goes on in the community is just as important as what happens provincially and nationally, and has a soft spot for small business. Markham is a bit of a contrarian and usually has a unique take on the events of the day.
Silvia Pikal, Alberta Editor: Silvia edits stories for the Alberta Beacon papers and reports on various topics including energy, health care, human rights, social justice issues and arts. Silvia was previously an online editor at Mobile Magazine and The Calgary Journal. She has written for several local publications, including Culinaire Magazine and FFWD. Her other passion is making documentaries, the latest of which was screened in the 2012 Fairy Tales Film Festival.
Christopher Walsh, Senior Reporter: Christopher has reported for a number of small town community newspapers. He’s also a published author. He covers the local and provincial political beats.
Krista Sylvester, Minor Sports Reporter: Krista is a local television reporter who also freelances for several newspapers and magazines including FFWD and Stephen magazine. She particularly enjoys writing about sports, arts, lifestyle, entertainment, politics and crime, and often likes to learn new things through her penmanship. When she’s not typing away, she will be found playing a sport somewhere – probably hockey.
Jack Zenert, Online Marketing/Business Editor: Jack has a diverse background in sales, education and publishing. Jack may be what you call a ‘Jack of all Trades’ and a master of many. Jack has the unique ability to get to the very heart of the issue, whether it is in a sales situation, reporting a story, or dealing with our valued clients. Jack comes from hearty Saskatchewan dirt farmin’ roots, is a U of Saskatchewan Ag grad and has an MBA from University of Fredericton.
