Racette school students have been evacuated and moved to other schools after mini van crashed into the school this morning.

Three children were airlifted to an Edmonton hospital with critical injuries after a mini-van crashed into a school in St. Paul, Alberta.

The crash occurred at 9:30 a.m.,  just after the school day had started.

Doris Stapleton of the RCMP says police believe the driver of the mini van went off the road and drove into the side of Racette School in St. Paul.  The driver has been taken into custody by St Paul RCMP.

The van went through the walls of a classroom.  The collision left a large hole in the school building.

Three of the injured children were pinned beneath the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.  STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene and the injured students were transported to The Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Other injured students were treated at St Paul Hospital.

The school has been evacuated and students have been taken to other schools in the area.

Doris Stapleton says a police investigation into this accident is underway. RCMP Collision Crash Team, which is a specialized unit trained to investigate serious motor vehicle accidents, is on scene.
