Roof collapses on firefighters

CFD firefighters injured in blaze released from hospital later in the evening
It was a close call for two Calgary Fire Department firefighters when a roof collapsed on them during a fire in the northeast Calgary neighbourhood of Beddington on Thursday afternoon.
The garage fire in the 100 block of Bedford Drive was called in at about 4:30 p.m. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the detached garage and the fire was spreading to the home.
Prior to fire crews arriving, a neighbour had alerted the resident about the fire and that person got out of the home safely. While firefighters were checking the inside of the house to ensure that no one else was inside the home, a large piece of ceiling fell on them.
The two were taken to hospital for further assessment and while there, Fire Chief Bruce Burrell and Deputy Chief Neil Johnson both paid the firefighters a visit. The two injured firefighters were released from hospital shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday.
“There are inherent dangers in firefighting for which Calgary fire fighters are well trained and prepared,” said Chief Burrell, adding “that fire scenes are unpredictable.” “We are pleased that both fire fighters are home with their families tonight recuperating and as always we will ensure that they receive the support that they need.”
The fire destroyed the garage and the home and damaged some of the siding on the garage across the alley.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters had to remove the roof of a vehicle to free a trapped man after a high speed crash at Rocky Ridge Road and 112 Ave. N.W. Wednesday night.
