Man airlifted to Foothills Hospital by STARS
Carseland rafting accident at weir in Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park
A 26-year old man from Calgary is in Foothills Hospital after a rafting accident at the Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park on Sunday afternoon.
The victim along with a 27-year old man from Sylvan Lake were attempting to guide a raft over a weir. During their ride over the weir, the two were thrown from the raft into the water. The man from Sylvan Lake managed to swim to the shore and was unharmed, but the Calgary man was not so lucky.
Corporal D.K. Nelson of the High River RCMP says the 26-year old pulled himself back onto the raft which was trapped in a heavy current at the bottom of the weir. A Search and Rescue Team attempted to rescue the man, but were unsuccessful and the man was eventually pulled under the water.
The man resurfaced a few minutes later and was then treated by EMS and the Search and Rescue Team. He was airlifted to Foothills Hospital in Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance and was reported to be in critical condition.
The identity of the victim is being withheld.
The investigation by High River RCMP into the matter is ongoing. Police do report that there are signs on the waterway advising rafters to avoid the weir.
The Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park is located 70 Kilometres southeast of Calgary.
