Bow River popular with rafters

The Louise Bridge connects Downtown West End with Memorial Drive and Kensington.
The Calgary Fire Department Aquatics rescue team removed a tree from the Bow River that was snagged on a bridge abutment and posing a danger to the many rafters enjoying the warm weather Saturday afternoon.
The rescue team was called to the Louise Bridge where a large log was pinned onto one of the bridge abutments. Boaters on the Bow River were in danger of snagging the hazard, according to fire department officials. A number of rafts were on the river at the time.
A fire department rescue boat was staged upstream from the hazard and warned boats away from the area while it was being removed.
A heavy duty tow truck was called in by the Calgary Police Service and the aquatics team ferried a cable via boat to the large-diameter 45-feet long log, which officials believe was felled by a beaver.
In heavy current, crews cinched the cable onto the log allowing the tow truck to pull it free from the abutment.
The log was towed over to the bank where it will be removed by city workers at a later date.
