Raft flips while navigating waterfall
White water rafting accident near Longview claims life of 25-year old Calgary man
A 35-year old Calgary man is dead after a fatal white water rafting accident west of Longview on Sunday afternoon.
Turner Valley RCMP and EMS were called to the accident scene at around 2 p.m., on the Highwood River, eight Kilometres west of Longview. When STARS Air Ambulance and local emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found the victim with no signs of life.
Emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate the man, however, he never regained consciousness.
Constable Joel Logan of the Turner Valley RCMP says police believe that the man was white water rafting with four friends when the raft attempted to navigate a waterfall, but ended up flipping over in the fast moving water. The four others made it to shore, but the victim drifted downstream where he was found floating face down in the water by swimmers.
The man was pulled from the water, but the rescuers had to scramble up a 200 foot bank to call for help.
The victim’s name is not being released at this time. The man was wearing a helmet and a life jacket.
