Openings pose high risk to pedestrians and pets
The City suspects that catch basin covers are being stolen for their mistaken high scrap metal value.
The City of Vancouver is asking for the public’s help following the theft of 47 catch basin covers from city streets and lanes around the city in recent days.
Catch basins are placed against the curb on streets and in key locations in lanes to collect rain and runoff water and filter debris from the roadway.
The covers are cast-iron grates and may be stolen in the mistaken belief they have a high value as scrap metal.
Residents are asked to report missing catch basin cover locations to 311 (604.873.7000). City crews respond to each location when they are notified the grate is missing.
Each catch basin cover costs the City about $176.
When a catch basin is left uncovered, it leaves a gap that poses a safety risk to all road users, particularly pedestrians and pets. The catch basin itself is a five to six-foot hole where water from the street runs into the basin and flows away.
The Vancouver Police Department are also investigating the thefts. Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity in streets and lanes to the Vancouver Police Department by calling 911.
