Six Aboriginals from Alberta will now be working alongside RCMP officers after completing the RCMP’s Aboriginal Pre Cadet Training Program, or ATPT, at the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The six are now beginning their 14-week assignment where they will work in various RCMP detachments throughout Alberta.

Zackariah Healy from Siksika has been posted to the Gleichen RCMP detachment, while Shannon Kornago from Leduc will be working at the Stony Plain detachment.  Hobema’s Caycee Littlechild will be staying close to home, having been posted to the Hobema detachment and Brock Nickel from Lethbridge will be heading northeast from his home and working in Taber.  Carson Suttie from Okotoks will be at the Okotoks RCMP office and finally, Jordan Walker from Camrose has been posted to the Wetaskiwin RCMP detachment.

The Aboriginal Pre Cadet Program is open to Aboriginal Canadians between the ages of 19 and 29.  “Many APTP participants are already interested in a career with the RCMP and this unique summer program is an opportunity for them to further explore their options and make a decision about their future. I know they have ahead of them a summer nowhere near ordinary,” said Constable  Heather Noon-Roy, who is responsible for overseeing the APTP in Edmonton and northern Alberta.

Constable Noon-Roy says the Aboriginal Pre Cadet Program is “part of the RCMP’s on-going commitment to workplace representative of the communities we serve”.

After completing the program, the graduates will go on the be mentored by RCMP officers at their assigned detachments and will be encouraged to begin the process of becoming an RCMP officer.

“The training I just completed was a great experience and I hope to go back to Depot as a Regular Member as soon as I complete the Aboriginal Pre Cadet Training Program” said Caycee Littlechile.

Since 1996, the program has graduated 411 candidates and over 50 per cent of those graduates have gone on to apply to the RCMP.  Over 40 candidates have gone on to become police officers with the RCMP and 19 are employed in other capacities.
