Calgary Police have charged 40-year old Melissa Holman, former head of the Temporary Foreign Workers Association of Canada, with defrauding a newcomer to Canada of more than $2 million in property and cash.

Police allege that between June 23, 2011 and July 8, 2011, the victim in the scam was convinced to turn over the deeds to two properties that were in her name and give banking access to the accused.

The victim was allegedly told by Holman that it was unsafe for her to have local assets while in Canada on a visa.  The victim turned over to the accused two properties, one in Signal Hill and the other in Springbank.

It is alleged that along with having the properties deeded to her, Melissa Holman also wrote over $410,000 in bank drafts from the victim’s bank account which were made payable to the accused.

At the time of the alleged offences, Melissa Holman was the president of the Temporary Foreign Workers Association of Canada.

The investigation into the alleged fraud began in September of 2011 after the matter was reported to the Calgary Police Association.

On Thursday, June 7, District 4 detectives arrested and charged Melissa Holman with five counts of fraud over $5,000 and five counts of theft over $5,000.

Melissa Holman is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, August 21.
