Edmonton Police homicide detectives have finished interviewing Travis Baumgartner, the suspect in a brutal triple homicide and armed robbery at the University of Alberta Hub Mall on Friday, June 15.
Baumgartner was arrested during the afternoon of Saturday, June 16, while attempting to cross into the U.S., at the Lynden Washington border crossing, south of Aldergrove, B.C.
On Sunday, Travis Baumgartner appeared before a Justice on Canada-wide warrants for three counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm. Three of his fellow armoured guards, 26-year old Michelle Shegelski, 35-year old Brian Ilesic and 39-year old Eddie Rejano were killed. Matthew Schuman was critically injured in the robbery and remains in critical condition in hospital.
Baumgartner was interviewed by EPS detectives in Langley, B.C., and will likely be escorted by sheriffs to Edmonton Wednesday.
“By all accounts, our investigators have informed us that Mr. Baumgartner is cooperating with them,” said Supt. Bob Hassel, of EPS’s Criminal Investigations Division. “Our investigation continues.”
Edmonton Police forensic experts have completed their investigation of Baumgartner’s pickup truck, which the accused was driving when he was stopped at the border.
“I can confirm for you today, our investigators were unable to locate Baumgartner’s firearm and body armour, which he wore that ill-fated evening last Friday, during his guard duties with G4S. We also believe, at this time, that Baumgartner was the lone perpetrator in these shootings and robbery,” stated Hassel.
Police have allegedly found $330,000 in Canadian currency. Baumgartner attempted to cross into the U.S. with only his drivers licence, no passport and the truck had the licence plate from his mother’s car on it.
