High speeds common on Highway 16A

Allegedly drunk driver caught doing 182 kph in a 100 kph zone.

A 26-year old Stony Plain man is in trouble with the law after Edmonton police allegedly caught him doing 182 kph in a 100 kph zone last week while driving drunk.

Capital West ITU members clocked the vehicle on Highway #16A eastbound at Highway #60 on radar at 182 kph in a posted 100 kph zone of the highway.

Police say that once stopped the driver appeared to be intoxicated and a subsequent impaired driving investigation resulted in breath samples exceeding .22 mgs %.

The fact that this individual was grossly exceeding the posted limit during early evening hours, on a busy commuter highway, in a state of impairment, is of great concern to Traffic Unit members, the Capital West ITU said in a press release.

Despite heavy enforcement in the area, Capital West ITU continues to see high speeds being recorded on this stretch of highway. Heavy enforcement initiatives will continue to be conducted on this and other commuter highways within the Capital Region.
