Elizabeth Metis Settlement death caused by stabbing injury

22-year old Derrick John Jackknife of the Elizabeth Metis Settlement died as a result of a fatal stabbing injury, according to the Chief Medical Examiners Office in Edmonton.

A young offender appeared in Cold Lake Provincial Court on Wednesday, June 13 in connection with the death of Derrick Jackknife.  The youth, whose name cannot be released, is facing a second degree murder charge in connection with the death.

Doris Stapleton of the RCMP says the youth has since been released from custody on stringent conditions, including house arrest.

The fatal stabbing occurred during the early morning hours of June 9, 2012 on the Elizabeth Metis Settlement, approximately 35 Kilometres southeast of Cold Lake.  Cold Lake RCMP, along with Emergency Medical Services responded to the Elizabeth Metis Settlement after the stabbing was reported.

When police and EMS arrived at the scene, they discovered that Derrick Jackknife had passed away.  His body was then taken to Edmonton for an autopsy.

The next court appearance for the accused will be on July 25 at the Cold Lake Provincial Court.
