ATV rider dies when vehicle plunges 65 metres
A 38-year old man is dead after a tragic ATV accident at a northeast Edmonton industrial site.
The accident occurred just before 7 p.m., on Wednesday, May 9 at 131 Ave and Meridian Street. Police believe the man and his friend were both driving ATVs in a fenced off area in a private industrial aggregate material site. The victim plunged off a steep embankment and fell approximately 65 metres into an open pit below.
Edmonton Police and EMS were called to the scene. The ATV driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews. The man was wearing a helmet and alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. The Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy on the man.
The name of the deceased will not be released.
Edmonton Police Service Northeast Division are investigating, along with the EPS Traffic Section and the owner of the business. The ATV riders did not have permission to be riding on the property.
“You can only drive ATVs on private land and definitely not on city streets or parks,” says Constable Steven Levesque of EPS Traffic Section. “If you are operating an ATV on private land you must have permission from the land owner.”
