Crash near Ponoka closes Highway 2A for 4 hours
A three vehicle collision north of Ponoka has claimed the life of a 40-year old man from Hobbema.
The accident occurred on March 13, just before 10 a.m., four Kilometres north of Ponoka on Highway 2A. Ponoka RCMP, EMS and Fire crews were dispatched to the scene.
Constable Ryan Koehli of the Ponoka RCMP says the three vehicles involved were a pickup truck, a semi-truck and trailer and a van.
Police believe the pickup crossed the centre line and collided with the semi truck which then caused the pickup truck to spin and strike the van. The van and the pickup came to rest on the highway, while the semi truck and trailer ended up in the ditch and on the embankment of a CP railway track.
The driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck, a 40-year old man from Hobbema, was ejected from the truck and died at the scene. The drivers of the van and semi truck, also the only occupants of the vehicle were unharmed in the crash.
The highway was closed and motorists were re-routed around the accident for about four hours while investigators and emergency service crews were on the scene. A CP Rail crew also assessed the damage to the train track that runs parallel to the highway, which caused minor railway delays.
Constable Koehli adds that the collision is still under investigation.
