Chief Medical Examiner confirms death linked to ecstasy containing PMMA

January 29 death linked to PMMA tainted ecstasy
Calgary Police have received reports from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner stating that the death of a 37-year old man on January 29 was caused by ingesting ecstasy tainted with PMMA.
Police were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Falsby Place N.E., on January 29 for reports of a man in distress. When emergency services personnel arrived at the scene, the man was pronounced dead. Two other people inside the home were taken to the Rockyview Hospital for precautionary measures.
Police seized a variety of drugs from the home and sent samples off for testing. Today, the Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner concluded that the man’s death was caused by paramethoxymethamphetamine.
Seven other people in Calgary have died from taking ecstasy that was tainted with PMMA. PMMA is a very toxic drug that can overheat the body, leading to brain and organ damage.
The Calgary Police Service, with information from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, has confirmed an eighth death in connection with paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA).
On February 8, after an undercover operation, Calgary Police arrested and charged two people with trafficking in ecstasy. Drugs seized during the arrest have been tested and come back positive for containing PMMA. Joshua Bradly Cook and Elizabeth Thomas are facing drug trafficking charges.
