Calgary Police hoping for help in mysterious death of Roderick Basaraba
Roderick Basaraba death is suspicious, but not yet deemed a homicide

Police know the cause of Roderick Basaraba’s death, but they are unsure of what led up to the suspicious death of 57-year old Roderick Basaraba of Calgary or if his death is a homicide.

On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, emergency crews were called to a home in the 1800 block of 15 St S.W., in Calgary. Firefighters found Basaraba inside the burning home, where he was rescued from the fire and taken to hospital where he died later in the afternoon.
Calgary Police were called in to investigate the death of the man and the house fire. During the investigation, police discovered that there had been an altercation at the home earlier in the day. Later in the day, the fatal fire started in the home, but police and fire investigators have not been able to say what the cause of the fire was or if it was deliberately set.
It is believed that Basaraba died from a combination of injuries sustained in the earlier altercation and smoke inhalation.
The Homicide Unit is reviewing the extremely suspicious case, but Basaraba’s death has not been officially classified as a homicide as the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. CPS investigators are currently waiting for additional forensic crime scene analysis and are continuing to review the evidence with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
In their investigation, police have identified at least two people who may have been involved in the altercation, the fire, or both. Police believe these people were associated with Roderick Basaraba for a short time before his death.
Police believe the suspects may have been driving a dark-coloured late 1990′s Jeep Cherokee.
