Your marketing minute: Is your time eating your money?

Is time on your side? Are you frequently short of time? Do you become anxious and stressed because timelines are encroaching on deadlines that cannot be met unless you stay up all night? Why do you do this to yourself?

In order to make a change, the “a-ha” might lie in how you think about time. Take an inventory of how you talk about time.  Begin by listening to yourself.  When you make references to your time in casual conversation, what do you say?

“I’m always so busy.”

“I never have enough time.”

“I will never get it done on time.”

Take note of the words that you are using. Remember them and write them down. Your words will tell you how you think about your time. It’s your “How” that is directing the time traffic in your brain.

Now comes the change part. Change your words; change your approach to managing your time.  Changing how you think about time can be as simple as using different words. The following references to time demonstrate a more commanding effect.

“I have time on Friday morning.”

“I have space on my calendar next week.”

If you wrote down that you never seem to find the time, change the statement to read something like, “I (always) find the time.”  Continue to re-write your time statements into positive statements that support you. Scrap the old list. Read the new one every day until you find yourself using your new way of thinking about your time.

The pay-off?  You may discover that you have more time than you ever thought.

As an entrepreneur, a manager or a CEO, time is one of your greatest assets. Managing it well can be a challenge but it can bring tremendous rewards. Managing it well can mean the difference between lost opportunities and money deposited in your bank account.
