Sylan Lake woman killed running across Highway 2

A 51-year old woman from Sylvan Lake died from injuries she sustained after being hit by an SUV when she was running across Highway 2 near Red Deer.

The accident took place about 1 Km north of the 32 St overpass at Red Deer, at just before 10 p.m. The driver, a 52-year old woman from Calgary was southbound in the right lane when the Sylvan Lake woman ran across the highway from the east median to the west ditch, right in front of the driver.   The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and nightfall had set in.

The driver of the SUV attempted to stop, but could not avoid hitting the pedestrian.  The driver pulled over to the side, and stopped on the right shoulder.  The pedestrian was taken to Red Deer Hospital with serious injuries.  She was given emergency medical treatment, but later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Innisfail and Ponoka RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit investigated the accident.  City of Red Deer Fire and EMS and RCMP Blackfalds were also called to the scene of the crash.  The accident is still under investigation.  No charges will be laid in the matter.

Southbound lanes of Highway 2 were reduced to one lane while emergency crews attended the accident scene.
