Family of 5 injured in van rollover on QEII near Leduc

Just before 1 a.m., on Monday, September 23, Leduc RCMP were called out to a single vehicle rollover near Leduc on the QEII, 1 Km north of Glen Park Road.

RCMP along with Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services attended the scene.  Police believe a family was northbound on the QEII when the vehicle left the highway, entered the median, the over corrected and eventually lost control, rolling a couple of times before coming to rest on its roof.

Two of the five family members were ejected from the van when it rolled; it is believed that neither of the ejected occupants were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.  One of those ejected from the van was a 20-year old man who sustained life-threatening injuries and was air lifted to hospital via STARS Air Ambulance.  He is in hospital in critical condition.

The driver, a 55-year old man was trapped inside the van and firefighters had to assist him in getting out of the vehicle.  The driver, along with the three remaining occupants, a 44-year old woman, a 16-year old girl and a 12-year old boy were all taken to hospital by ground ambulance.  They are in hospital in stable condition.

The QEII was closed northbound for a short period of time to allow STARS air ambulance to land.

The investigation is ongoing with assistance from an RCMP Collision Analyst.  Police are looking into the circumstances leading up to the accident.  Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.  No charges have been laid in the accident and the names of the victims are not being released.
