Cop/civilian crash near village of Erskine
A Stettler RCMP officer is very lucky to walk away from a serious crash involving an RCMP cruiser and a Dodge pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 835, near Erskine.
Crash occurred west of Stettler
The crash happened on August 6 at about 5 p.m. The RCMP officer was heading west on highway 12, the officer was en-route to assist a neighbouring detachment. While driving, the officer had his emergency lights on and the siren was activated. The officer encountered a line of vehicles also heading west and as the police car was overtaking the vehicles, he collided with the driver of a 2006 Dodge quad cab in the intersection of the two highways as the truck driver was turning south on to Highway 835.
As a result of the collision, the police car rolled several times, eventually landing on its wheels in the ditch on the south side of the road. The pickup truck which was being driven by a 26 year old man from the Stettler area, came to a stop on Highway 12 just west of the intersection.
The driver of the pickup was the most seriously injured in the crash. He was taken to Stettler Hospital where he was examined by doctors and released later in the evening. The officer walked away from the crash, suffering only minor injuries despite the cruiser being destroyed in the crash. The pickup truck sustained significant damage to the front end and left side of the vehicle.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and road conditions were good at the time of the accident. The RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and an RCMP officer from Westaskiwin will be working on the investigation into this accident. No charges have been laid at this time.
