Calgary Police Cadet Corps open house tonight at CPS Headquarters, Westwind Campus.

Calgary Police Cadet Corps is holding an open house tonight for anyone wishing to learn more about the free program for area youth who may be interested in a career in policing.

The open house will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the CPS Headquarters, Westwind Campus, located at 5111 47 St N.E.

The Cadet Corps is based on the Canadian Military Cadet Programs (Army, Navy, and Air) that have been operating for over 100 years.

The program is free and open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18 who are interested in becoming police officers.

The program offers the kids a chance to develop leadership skills, gain valuable experience, better their physical fitness and enjoy camaraderie, positive social interaction and achievement.

Police Cadets at Camp Valaqua at Water Valley, AB learn about leadership skills, survival training and outdoor activities.

The Cadets will participate in guided fitness training, marksmanship training, first aid training, outdoor survival training, weekend camps as well as community events and parades.  The curriculum also includes instruction on dress and deportment, citizenship, communication, conflict resolution, law, leadership and public speaking.

The Calgary Police Cadet Corps program runs Thursday nights between 5:45 and 9:15 from September to May.  Registration for the 2013/14 season closes on May 31, 2013.
