Alberta Series Part I celebrates action packed weekend of freestyle snowboarding

Alberta Series Part I event at COP

Riders as young as five-years old participated in the Alberta Series Part I event at COP on the weekend.

The Alberta Series Part I, held at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary from Jan. 11 to 13, ended on a successful note with over 100 riders taking part in the event.

The Alberta Series Part I was organised by the Alberta Snowboarding Association (ASA) with an emphasis was on providing a fun and safe environment for male and female Alberta Freestyle athletes to kick off the 2013 season.

The focus of the action packed weekend was on Freestyle which included the Halfpipe & Slopestyle disciplines of snowboarding.

The Friday evening junior event contained a fun and relaxed grassroots competition for young riders aged 5-12 and an open category for girls of all ages.

The 38 riders showed their impressive skills on rails, jumps and a half pipe with 12 foot walls. Results are as follows:

Girls: Age 6-12: 1. Elenor Buchner, 2. Hailey Garrido, 3. Lola Kutcher.

Age 13 and above: 1. Kira Lengkeek, 2. Kennedi Deck, 3. Maggie (Mechteld) Dekking.

Boys: Age 5-9: 1.Liam Gill, 2. Ethan Staz, 3. Tyson Lewis.

Age 10-12: 1. Sean Miskiman, 2. Spencer Trimble, 3. Jack MacDougall.

Saturday at the Alberta Series Part I was a training day for athletes of all ages and skill levels. Riders from across Alberta came to tune up their aerial awareness with a trampoline session, practice their jumps into a 55 foot long airbag, and warmed up their runs for the Sunday competition.

The ASA also presented to a packed theatre of athletes on what elements a snowboard judge is looking for in a winning run. A total of 104 athletes participated in this training day.

Sunday featured 95 experienced Slopestyle riders throwing down wildcats, rodeos and 720′s. Results are as follows:

15 and Under: 1. Carter Jarvis, 2. Liam King, 3. Jeff Adams.

16-19: 1. Morgan Buchner, 2. JJ Westbury, 3. Ryan Tosi.

Ladies Open: 1. Kirsty MacDonald, 2. Allison Vizina, 3. AJ Cairns.

Men’s Open: 1. Jamie Blain, 2. Jam Gallagher, 3. Jordan Blain.

The ASA thanked the participants and sponsors who donated generous time and prizing to make this event a success. The sponsors included Burton, House of Hygge, Nomis, Candy Grind, Analog, Stepchild, Rip Curl, Tech Nine, Anon, Shredz Shop, Royal Board Shop and the Board Dogs.
