Distracted driver using iPod before hitting 70-year-old pedestrian in North Vancouver

Teen driver remains on scene, charged with distracted driving

A distracted driver fiddling with her iPod lost control and struck an elderly man in North Vancouver.

A 70-year-old pedestrian is in hospital after being hit by a distracted teenage driver using an iPod on Mount Seymour Parkway in North Vancouver.

The distracted driver has been charged driving with undue care and attention and driving while using an electronic device under the Motor Vehicle Act.

The 19-year-old was using her iPod when her eyes left the road for a moment and she lost control of the vehicle.

Her car struck the elderly man while walking on the sidewalk. The North Vancouver resident has sustained several injuries including a broken leg and broken ribs.

“The consequences of a moment’s lapse in judgement can literally make the difference of life and death for someone. It’s not worth the risk,” said North Vancouver RCMP Cst. Richard De Jong, of the risks of using electronic devices while driving.

The female driver didn’t flee from the scene and waited for police and emergency crews to arrive.

The pedestrian was later taken to Lions Gate Hospital where is expected to survive his injuries.
