Calgary bus depot drug bust leads to charges against Vancouver man
Than Nguyen of Vancouver arrested at Calgary Greyhound Bus depot
Calgary bus depot drug bust suspect allegedly tried to make a run for it after being told of his imminent arrest.
35-year old Than Thanh Nguyen of Vancouver is facing drug related charges after he was found allegedly carrying half a Kilo of cocaine at the Calgary Greyhound Bus depot.
Corporal Darrin Turnbull of the RCMP says that on Jan. 4, Calgary Drug Section mounties were at the bus depot on an unrelated matter when the suspect caught their attention. The man had just arrived on a Greyhound Bus from Vancouver.
Officers spoke to the man which led to an investigation. The police then allegedly found half a Kilo of cocaine on Nguyen, in his backpack.
After Than Nguyen was told by police that he was under arrest for possession of cocaine, he allegedly tried to make a run for it and flee from the arresting officers.
Nguyen was stopped by police and taken into custody without further incident.
RCMP drug experts estimate the street value of the cocaine seized during the Calgary bus depot drug bust to be approximately $50,000.
“Illegal Drugs of any kind are a serious health and social problem harming individuals, relationships and families, often irreparable. It’s estimated to cost the Canadian economy billions of dollars each year in lost productivity, law enforcement and health care costs. The criminality and violence that surrounds illicit drug use poses a threat to the safety of our communities.” said RCMP Spokesman, Corporal Darrin Turnbull.
35-year old Than Nguyen of Vancouver is known to police. He has been charged with resisting arrest and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was released on a significant cash bail and is schedule to appear in Calgary Provincial Court on Feb. 4, 2013.
