A 21-year old man is missing and presumed drowned after he could not make it back to shore while cliff diving on the Bow River near the Seebe Dam.
The young man and a woman were diving into the Bow River on Wednesday evening at about 7 p.m. After diving off a cliff, the two had trouble getting back to shore so they swam down river to where other people were cliff diving. But, the two soon had trouble swimming in the river.
The nearby divers tried to help the pair and were able to save the woman, but the man got more distressed and went under the water. Attempts to save him were unsuccessful and he was not seen again.
Kananaskis Public Safety assisted in the rescue by conducting an air and water search, but the man was not found. STARS Air Ambulance and the Calgary Fire Department Water Rescue crews were also called to the scene to help look for the missing man.
Corporal Gary Fedrau says the rescue/recovery effort will continue this morning with the assistance of a dive team.
