Ponoka RCMP send man for mental health evaluation

Ponoka RCMP have a man in custody after he was caught driving erratically on the QEII .  The Calgary man’s mental health is being assessed after he told arresting officers that he was on his way to heaven.

On Sunday August 19, Ponoka RCMP received reports of an erratic driver on the busy highway.  The man was spotted driving heading northbound on the QEII, his vehicle operating on one metal rim.  When officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, the driver failed to stop and a short lived pursuit followed.

Constable Chris Noble of the Ponoka RCMP says that because of high traffic volume, the chase was quickly called off for public safety reasons.

The high traffic volume helped police as it slowed the suspect enough to allow them to keep an eye on him.  Nearby RCMP detachments were called to prepare spike belts to stop the man.

As police monitored the driver, they witnessed him lose control, enter the median, launch over a centre median and narrowly miss entering the opposing lane of traffic.

Finally, near the intersection of the QEII and Highway 13, the driver made an erratic lane change which caused the car to go out of control.  The vehicle side swiped one car and rear-ended another truck and went off the highway near Highway 13, west of Wetaskiwin.

The 52-year old driver, a Calgary man, was taken into custody and will be charged with dangerous driving and flight from police.

He is currently being assessed for his mental health after telling arresting officers that he was on his way to heaven.
