Building slated for opening in 2013

The official ground breaking ceremony for the new Multi-Services Centre in the southeast Calgary community of Seton was held on Thursday.
The facility will serve approximately 20,000 Calgarians living in the deep south end of the city. The communities of Seton, Auburn Bay and Cranston will benefit from the new Multi-Services Centre.
“The development and establishment of the Seton Multi-Services Centre will help the Calgary Fire Department better meet the emergency response demands coming from the growing communities of Seton, Auburn Bay, and Cranston,” says Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “Our top priority is to provide Calgarians with a reliable and responsive emergency service.”
In addition to providing emergency response service, Calgary Fire Department fire crews will offer Calgarians a number of other programs including free blood-pressure testing and needle drop-off.
Population in the extreme southeast corner of the city has grown quickly in the past three years. In Seton, the community has grown by 44 per cent and more growth is expected. So far, Seton, Auburn Bay and Cranston have been served by the McKenzie Towne fire station. The new facility will free up McKenzie Towne firefighters to respond to other emergencies closer to home.
The building will also meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold standards. All LEED certified buildings are designed to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve energy and water. The landscaping and architectural design will help to ensure the best possible integration within the fabric of the community.
The centre will also offer residents services from other city departments including Community and Neighbourhood Services, Animal and Bylaw Services and the Calgary Police.
The total cost of the building, land, apparatus and equipment is pegged at $19 million. $15.8 million of that is coming from the Province of Alberta’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative.
The building is expected to be open in 2013.
