The field at SAIT makes watching a Calgary minor soccer game a beautiful experience. The city’s skyline is just the right distance, perfectly etched along the sky’s edge. The field itself, brightly lined and just the right height of artificial turf.

Last night, the under 18 Tier 1 girls of the NSD Saints and the Foothills 95 were fortunate to be battling hard in this picturesque environment.

The players of both teams were quite focused on the task at hand and probably didn’t notice the city draped before them. It was the last game of the season and time to give it their best. At this level of soccer, it’s about knowing your strengths and using them on the pitch.

Saint’s coach, Matt Blair, shared his views on the difference this past year has made for his girls and how that translated in to this game.

“They’ve bought into the fact that they can compete with anybody, so their self belief has gone through the roof this season,” he said. “They’re very disciplined, very organized and very coachable. Always nice when you’re trying to get everyone to play on the same page, so that was very helpful this season.”

Blair believed the girls played well but that it was a much better second half than first.

“They wanted to come in a certain place within the league and they needed a certain result. They didn’t get the result they were hoping for but the second half effort was a huge positive for me. It’s been a building year for them. I think they’ve improved immensely over the course of the year and they got a lot out of it,” he added.
The NSD Saints won the game 4 – 1.
The Foothills 95 coach, Danny Hay, also recognized his team’s new upper edge after a tough season.
‘We’re a ’95 team playing up in a mostly ’94 league. It’s been a tough season but now having the privilege of playing with some of these better ’94 teams is going to allow us to really do well,” he said. “We’re going to play against ’95′s that have been playing at Tier 2 level and are coming back up to Tier 1 so it’s been really good playing against great quality teams. We’re looking forward to playing in our own age group.”
A valuable lesson that Hay believes his girls have learned, is one that helps every individual playing this team sport.
“What they learned this year was that  grit and determination that it takes. There’s always lots of talent on any of these teams but playing together, working together and working hard, that’s tough to do for 90 minutes and I think they learned that in spades this year,” said Hay.
