Calgary river advisories lifted
River will be monitored and advisory could be re-instated
Get your rafts out of the garage – Calgary river advisories have been lifted
As of Thursday, July 12, the advisories on use of the Elbow and Bow Rivers have been lifted and the Calgary Fire Department urges Calgarians to be cautious on the rivers despite the all clear.
The Calgary Fire Department reminds river enthusiasts that conditions on the rivers can change quickly and that all users should be prepared for a variety of conditions. Anyone using the advanced and expert-level rapids at Harvie Passage should be experienced in white water kayaking and should also be equipped with property safety gear, including helmets and life jackets.
If you are closing in on Harvie Passage and not an experienced kayaker, you need to get out of the river and portage to an area downstream from the extreme water hazard.
Also, be sure to always wear a life jacket or personal floatation device while on the river. CFD also reminds Calgarians that all vessels must have life jackets or PFDs that are worn by all passengers as well as a sounding device such as a whistle. Also, vessels should have a buoyant heaving line (throw-bag) that is no less than 15 metres long and a bailer.
Being intoxicated while on the river is not tolerated, nor is the transportation or consumption of alcohol.
Calgary Fire Department crews will be patrolling the Bow River and encouraging all users to be prepared, properly equipped and aware of the risks associated with being on the water.
Also, the Calgary Fire Department will continue to monitor the rivers, and should it be necessary the advisory could be re-instated to ensure public awareness of the changing conditions.
