Some ties are sweeter than others for Calgary minor soccer players

The under 14 girls of SWU Sol and NSD Saints 99 were lucky to play Calgary minor soccer yesterday afternoon in the south of the city. The game prior was called due to lightening.

The game was evenly matched, with both teams itching for a win.

The final score was 1 – 1. A clean draw.

Sol was hoping for a win to help secure a spot at playing in Provincials but the team was content with the tie.

Cam Hartwick, coach for SWU Sol is hopeful but remaining realistic.

“Today went very well. The team played and worked hard. The heat was a bit of an issue for us early but  they fought through,” he said. “We’ve one game left. A win would have been perfect cause they’re chasing a provincial spot but the tie is important and might make a difference for us so we’ll see what happens.”

There’s a few teams ahead of Sol so they are now at the mercy of those teams finishing to see what happens. According to Hartwick, ” If the right team loses then we’ll be ok. Then we’ll be off to Provincials.”

There will be no rest for these girls either. Today they have a technical training session where they’ll be focusing on touch, finishing and shooting. Then they play their last game of the season on Monday night. The girls will certainly be warmed up for that game.

On the flip side, the Saints 99 were really proud of the results of Saturday’s game. It was the last of the season for these girls.

Saint’s coach, Stephanne Demers was smiling while he shared his views.

“It was a good game. (The tie) was actually really gratifying. We played Sol in a tournament, lost to them in penalties 1-0 for the bronze game so the girls were pretty excited to have a good draw against them today. It’s a good way to end the season,” he said.

Demers also added about his team, “(They’re) all first year U14′s, born in ’99. The squad we played today are all 98′s so that’s even more exciting. The younger ones got to draw the older ones.”

After the game, when most players had already made their way home, three Sol players were hanging together talking on the field. The girls are friends who not only see each other at least five times a week in soccer, they also spend time together whenever they can talking, kicking the ball around or just relaxing.

Sol’s # 5, Gabrielle and # 20 Jordan, have been playing soccer since they were three years old. Laura, # 17, joined when she was 8 through learning how many of her friends played. In fact, Jordon is a third year U14 player by choice. She wanted to continue playing with her close friends so hung back to enjoy the season together.

This too, could also be considered a sweet tie in Calgary minor soccer.
