Calgary Minor Soccer Giddy Up Cup tournament this weekend

Calgary minor soccer action Thursday night: White jerseyed Red Stars go head to head with the Predators.

By Jessica Belbin

Despite the wrath of abundant and malicious mosquitoes the Red Stars and Predators played an enthusiastic game Thursday night heading into this weekend’s Giddy Up Cup tournament, hosted by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association.

Red Stars Ashley Gibbs says their strategy was to “Play a controlled game, play with some speed on the outside, get them backpedalling as much as we can.”

Gibbs says his team won because of its “good strong defense so we didn’t let anything go past defensively and we had good speed out on the wings so we were able to exploit them out on the wings.”

Red Stars Striker Wyatt Phillips is proud of his team.

“I thought that our composure as a team was pretty good, that our passing and our communication really worked out well for us and that’s why I think we really dominated the other team by so many goals,” he said.

Phillips is hoping to go to the top this weekend.

“We’ve done fairly well in past Giddy Up Cup’s, so I hope we can come in either 1st or 2nd, at least make it to the final game,” he said.

The SWU Predators keeper, Bogdan Fanea also has big plans for the tournament.

“I’m looking forward to spending time in the sun and looking forward to beating NSDSC Roughnecks, because I know we can pull it off and it’s about time,” he said.

Coach Rene Morales of the Predators knows what his team needs to work on for this weekend but hopes the kids also have fun.

“We’re gonna try to work on getting the passes, making them crisper, get their confidence back and just try to get them talking a little more. It’s a tournament, we are there to have fun, if we can win a couple games that’s great but I want these kids to enjoy themselves and have a great time win or lose,” said Coach Morales.

The Giddy Up Cup runs Friday, July 6 – 8, game schedules can be seen at calgaryminorsoccer.com.
