The heat pounded the pitch yesterday afternoon but that didn’t stop two teams of U14 boys, Tier 2 from playing 90 minutes in a Calgary minor soccer game. Both teams played with little to no substitutes on the bench.

NSD Rovers coach, Duanne Wilson spoke about the challenges commonly found at the end of the outdoor season.

“(We had) just one sub. A lot of people are away on vacation right now but everyone has that issue. We expected more to show. Only started out with ten so I thought they did awesome today,” Wilson said. “We called two kids up from the team below us at the last second. They came here on 15 minutes notice so I thought my boys did very well.”

The Rovers ran off with the lead in the second half and defended strong, winning with a final score of 5 to 3.

Wilson empathized with his team having to play in the fierce heat with minimal breaks.

“When you win shorthanded like this, all the boys were playing well and I thought they all did a very good job in the heat. It was a team effort today,” he said.

Two of the Rovers dug out two goals each, # 17 and # 3. A consistent and almost expected results from Rovers # 3, Jeremy.

“(He’s) one of my reliable goal scorers. He scores almost every game for us,” added Wilson.

Thankfully Jeremy was able to make the game.

The boys will have just recovered and replenished all of the water they lost yesterday before they are back in practice tonight, practice Wednesday and then compete in their last game on Thursday. Correction, they’re under 14. They appear ready and able to play flat out at any time. To be that fit.

NSD Rovers 98

# 3 – 2

# 17 – 2
