Peter McCaffery so distorts my argument against the elimination of the Saskatchewan Film Tax Credit in his May 30th editorial that one has to wonder if he even bothered to read it.
Contrary to Mr. McCaffery’s opinion, my argument was not to selectively advocate for tax credits for industries ” I like,” but rather to illustrate the degree of state support for all industries in Saskatchewan. To resort to free-market arguments like Premier Brad Wall did in justifying the elimination of the tax credit while continuing to support highly profitable resource industries through state subsidies and tax credits was disingenuous to say the least.
Despite Mr. McCaffery’s protestations, tax credits are different from tax cuts. The Saskatchewan film industry used the credit as valid collateral for loans that producers could then use to finance productions. The same cannot be said of a tax cut.
If Mr. McCaffery believes the concern over the elimination of the film tax credit is “overblown,” he may want to witness the mass exodus of talented television and film workers and their families from our province since the announcement of the cut.
