Canadian food inspectors and Sobeys are warning Western Canadians to throw away lettuce from an American producer that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen that can kill.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the public should not consume the salads and in-store prepared foods containing lettuce from River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC based in California because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The salad products bearing Best Before dates 12MA12 to12MA29 (May 12 to 29, 2012) inclusive, are affected by this alert.

In addition, in-store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 20, 2012 from IGA and Sobeys stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario should be discarded and not consumed. These clerk-served foods may contain contaminated lettuce.

These products have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products, according to the CFIA.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The importer, Sobeys Inc., Mississauga, Ont. is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The following distributors have issued a voluntary recall:

  • FreshPoint Vancouver, Ltd. BC
  • J.E. Russel Produce Ltd., Toronto, ON
  • Martins Produce Ltd., Saskatoon, SK
  • Sysco Calgary AB
  • Sysco Edmonton AB
  • Sysco Regina SK
  • Sysco Winnipeg MB
  • Sysco Thunderbay ON

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
