Contractor trapped under debris

Crews rescue man after ceiling collapsed at Commonwealth Stadium
It took about an hour to free a man who was trapped under debris after part of Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium collapsed Wednesday afternoon.
A contractor doing work in the Edmonton Eskimos dressing room at the stadium had to be taken to hospital following a ceiling collapse. As of publication time his condition is unknown.
Edmonton Fire Rescue were called to the Stadium earlier in the day. When the first crew arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the ceiling had collapsed and trapped a contractor doing work in the Eskimos steam room. The steam room is a 12′ x 12′ space within the dressing room.
The Fire Rescue’s technical rescue team cut away and moved the concrete using special tools. The man was freed after an hour, and then treated by paramedics and transported to hospital.
At the time of the rescue, the man was conscious and interacting with the emergency responders.
City of Edmonton staff, including Occupational Health & Safety, were on-site shortly after the incident occurred.
“We are taking this matter seriously. The area was not open to the public at the time of the incident and will remain closed until we complete a full investigation into what occurred,” said Joe Kabarchuk, Branch Manager for Building and Landscape Services.
