Damage estimated to be in excess of $4 million
School, park and bulk fuel station set afire in Arrowwood arson
20-year old Thereon Majoras is in police custody and is facing numerous charges after a series of building and grass fires in the town of Arrowwood on Friday April 20.
At about 11:30 p.m., Gleichen RCMP responded to an intrusion alarm at the Arrowwood School. When officers arrived at the school, they saw the building was ablaze with smoke and fire coming out of the structure. The local volunteer fire department along with units from Milo and Siksika Nation were called in to fight the blaze.
Constable Damon Perrett of the Gleichen RCMP says that not long after the first fire was called in, another fire was discovered by RCMP officers at a park in Arrowwood. Soon after the park fire was discovered, another fire was reported at the bulk fuel station, also located in Arrowwood.
Luckily, all fires were quickly brought under control.
The village of Arrowwood is 106 kilometres southeast of Calgary and is listed in the 2011 census as having 188 residents.
The fires were investigated by the Provincial Fire Investigators along with the Gleichen RCMP. As a result of the investigation, 20-year old Thereon Majoras has been charged with setting the fires. Majoras faces five counts of arson to property, two counts of mischief over $5,000, two counts of mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breach of undertaking. The breach of undertaking charges are a result of conditions placed on him by a Justice of the Peace after an incident in November.
The damage estimate in the fires is in excess of $4 million.
Luckily, no one was injured as a result of the fires.
