Snowy roads may be factor in fatal car/train collision
Sylvan Lake Emergency Services responded to a car/train collision in the winter-quiet lakeside community on Monday, March 5, at just before 10:30 a.m.
RCMP, Fire Department and EMS personnel were all called to the scene of the crash at the railway crossing at 50 St and 50 Ave in the town of Sylvan Lake.
Corporal James Allemekinders of the Sylvan Lake RCMP says police believe the victim was southbound in his passenger car when he was struck by a westbound CN freight train. The Sylvan Lake area man, who was traveling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s identity is not being released at the request of the family.
Witnesses have told police that the crossing lights and bell were activated at the time of the crash. Corporal Allemekinders adds that there was heavy snow falling and the roads in the area were covered with snow. Police believe the poor road conditions may have been a factor in the accident and have ruled out alcohol.
All three CN Rail personnel were uninjured in the collision.
