Smoky Lake man killed in accident

Conklin crash

Edmonton woman and man from Conklin hospitalized

A 62-year old man from Smoky Lake was killed in a two vehicle crash near Conklin on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred on Highway 881, just outside the northern Alberta town at just before 6 p.m.  Witnesses to the crash told police that a southbound passenger van crossed the centre line and struck a northbound car.  The victim was driving the car; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van, a 41-year old woman from Edmonton and a male passenger, a 40-year old man from Conklin were both taken to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray with non life-threatening injuries.

At this time, police believe that the snowy roads may have been a contributing factor in the collision.  Highway 661 had to be shut down for several hours to investigate the crash, but has since been re-opened.

The RCMP are reminding motorists to drive safely and to be aware of the ever-changing weather and road conditions that winter brings.
