Dan Chabot, owner of Karaoke World, is a veteran of the Western Canada music scene. And for years he’s been recording amateur singers in his company’s studio on Macleod Trail.
“People are always amazed how good they sound on CD,” he said. “Even if they’re not accomplished singers, we have all the equipment and the computer software to tweak and adjust their voice until it sounds fantastic.”
A common reason for recording a few songs is the increasing popularity of audition shows like Canada’s Got Talent. Producers require performers to submit one or two recorded songs. Singers have a better chance of being accepted if their music has been professionally produced, says Chabot.
But the most popular reason for professionally recording is to give the CD as a gift. Family and friends are always amazed at the high quality of the songs.
“We provide the music beds all ready to go. All the singer has to do is come well rehearsed. The more rehearsed they are, the more time we can spend on coaching and the technical aspects of recording,” said Chabot.
Children and novice singers are always welcome to record. Chabot says he has plenty of tricks, learned over the years on stage and in the studio, to help first-timers relax and put out the best product they can.
“Professional recording doesn’t have to be intimidating. In fact, we can have a lot of fun with it. I can’t tell you how many karaoke singers we’ve recorded over the years and they always have a great time,” he said.
The best part for Chabot is watching the singer’s delight when he hands them their first professionally produced CD.
“We all sing in the shower. Who hasn’t dreamed of being a professional singer? Now pretty much anyone can sound like a professional,” he said.
