Christopher Heggen arrested and charged
Suspect was a friend of a relative of the victim
Red Deer City RCMP have charged 27-year old Christopher Heggen, of no fixed address, with kidnapping and numerous other charges after he allegedly forced a 60-year old woman to hand over her bank card, PIN and car keys to him. At knife point, he then forced the woman to go with him to a drive through bank machine where he withdrew cash from her account.
The incident occurred on January 1, at around 7:30 p.m. The suspect, Heggen, a friend of a relative of the victim, was allegedly at the home of the victim when he brandished a knife and made his demands of the woman. When the two were at the bank, the victim managed to get out of the vehicle and run to a safe location where she was able to contact police.
Constable Kathe DeHeer of the Red Deer RCMP says while on patrol in the downtown area, a police officer spotted the stolen vehicle at just before 12:30 a.m., the next morning. The officer turned on his emergency equipment in an attempt to pull the vehicle over. The suspect did not stop and a short pursuit ensued. The chase ended when the suspect collided with two parked vehicles, and side swiped a police vehicle.
A search of Heggen then allegedly resulted in the seizure of crack cocaine from the suspect. Police also determined that the suspect was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation.
Christopher Heggen has been charged with tow counts of robbery with a weapon, one count of hostage taking, one count of flight from police, one count of dangerous driving and one count of possession of crack cocaine. Heggen is also facing four additional charges for traffic violations.
Heggen was remanded into custody to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on January 3, 2012.
