Family of a missing Red Deer-area teen are pleading for help in locating Jesse Proulx, who cut off all contact with family before Christmas.

The 16-year-old has not been seen since December 22, when it is believed he began a journey to visit relatives near Winnipeg. When Proulx didn’t arrive, his family notified police.

“It may have been a while since I talked to him, but he was keeping in touch,” said Proulx’s aunt, Sarah Moss, who last spoke with the teen on December 16. “He hadn’t totally cut me off. I started getting worried. He’s been known to be suicidal.”

Proulx was to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Thursday, but did not attend.

“It’s not like him to miss an appointment like that,” Moss said.

Proulx’s parents were both killed in a murder-suicide in 2005 near Winnipeg and since then, Proulx has bounced around between family members, eventually being moved into a Red Deer group home. Last month, his bed was closed after he failed to return to the facility.

Moss says her greatest fear now is that the 16-year-old may have taken up with drug users he knows or that he may have committed suicide.

“Your brain just goes there,” Moss said. “Those are the concerns going around. He’s a sixteen year old traumatized teenager. Anything can happen when you’re 16 and life feels like it’s against you.”

A Facebook page has been set up and Red Deer RCMP are continuing to investigate, including following up on a lead that Proulx did speak to a friend on Wednesday.

Proulx was last seen in a blue hoodie and baseball cap. He is 5’8’’ and 150 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to contact Red Deer RCMP at (403) 343-5575.
