Billal Abbou charged in connection with June, 2011 fatal collision

Calgary Police have charged Billal Abbou, a 21-year old Calgary man, in connection with a deadly crash in the northeast on June 5, 2011.
The accident occurred just before midnight on Sunday, June 5. Police alleged that Abbou was speeding southbound on Stoney Trail in a Honda CRV with four other people in the vehicle. Acting Sergeant Colin Foster of the CPS Collision Reconstruction Unit says police believe that when Abbou attempted to take the ramp onto McKnight Boulevard, the small SUV left the road, rolled several times and ended up 120 metres from the road.
Two of the passengers of the vehicle were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the Honda. Both were taken to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The two victims were both from Calgary and were identified as Tina Thanh Nguyen, 16, and 20-year old Amrullah Safari.
Two other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries. They were treated and released. An uninjured man, originally thought to be the driver was taken into custody by police. He was later released without charges.
Sergeant Foster says that after a lengthy investigation, police have determined that the driver of the car was one of the two people taken to hospital for minor injuries. On Wednesday, January 25, police arrested 21-year old Billal Abbou without incident.
Abbou has been charged with two counts each of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing injury, criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, causing an accident resulting in death and causing an accident resulting in injury.
Billal Abbou has been remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.
