Snow route parking ban lifted

| December 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

Snow clearing operations on Calgary’s major traffic routes have now been completed, and as of 6 p.m., Monday night, the Snow Route Parking Ban will be lifted in the city.  The city will now focus its efforts on clearing the snow in areas where parking bans are not required.

The Snow Route Parking Bans are in place to allow city crews to clear the streets of snow more effectively and start clearing residential routes sooner.  It is hoped that the ban will make travel safer for all Calgarians this winter.  Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes and are marked by blue signs that have a white snowflake icon on them.  A map and full list of Snow Route locations is available on calgary.ca/snow.
Drivers in Calgary should be aware that the city will issue a Snow Route Parking Ban when plowing is required, after an accumulation of five centimetres or more of snow on the roads.
There are a number of ways to stay informed about Snow Route Parking Bans.  There will be media advisories and Calgarians can sign up for e-mail alerts or download a new app made available on iTunes.

New app available at iTunes

The app will give real-time information on plow and sander locations, road conditions and traffic cameras.  It will also send out notifications when a Snow Route Parking Ban has been advised, declared or lifted.  The app will also automatically show the conditions where the user is located and show where the GPS-fitted plows are clearing the streets.   For those who do not have an iPhone, The City has set up an email notification system at Calgary.ca/snow.

“We are very excited to continue moving forward with our strategy of offering City information to Calgarians on the channel of their choice,” says Cindy Pickett, director of Customer Service and Communications.
