This recent Thanksgiving Day long weekend was a bountiful harvest for Alberta RCMP and the integrated Sheriff and RCMP traffic units as they handed out 4050 traffic related tickets to drivers across Alberta.
Between Friday October 7 and Tuesday October 11, there were 24 hazardous driving violations handed out which included 16 dangerous driving charges and eight failure to stop for a police officer charges. 2,837 drivers were ticketed for speeding on Alberta highways and byways. 166 drivers were caught and charged for impaired driving and 55 24-hour suspensions were handed out for alcohol or drug use. 34 other alcohol related tickets were handed out and 87 intersection related infractions were ticketed by police. 299 seatbelt and or child restraint tickets recorded as well as 30 distracted driving infractions. Finally, 519 non-hazardous infractions were noted by police. These include no insurance or drivers operating a motor vehicle without permission to do so.
Cpl. Kevin Roblin of the RCMP says that during October, the RCMP and Sheriff integrated units are focussing their message on driver and passenger seatbelt use. Proper uses of occupant restraints increase the chances of escaping serious injury or death when involved in a motor vehicle collision.
