Man stunting in front of RCMP office in Grande Prairie faces charges

| October 11, 2011 | 0 Comments

A 50-year old Grande Prairie man is in police custody after leading police on a chase through the streets of Grande Prairie.  The pursuit began after the man was stunting in front of the RCMP Detachment in the northern Alberta city.

At 5:45 a.m., a Grande Prairie RCMP officer saw the man stunting in front of the detachment in his Dodge pickup truck.  Cpl. Carol McKinley of the Grande Prairie RCMP says the officer requested assistance when the driver and lone occupant of the truck drove up on the lawn and just missed the police officer.

A 30-minute chase then ensued which took RCMP officers throughout the city at speeds at and below 60 Km/hour.  Police allege that the driver would slow, stop and then back up.  He backed up in to at least one police car.

The pursuit finally ended on 102 Street between 123 and 124 Ave when the driver stopped his truck after he reportedly struck a police car that had pulled in front of him.  The man got out of his truck and police were then able to arrest the man without further incident.

A 50 year old Grande Prairie man remains in custody as a result of an early morning pursuit which began today in front of the local detachment at 10202-99th Street in the City.

Two police cruisers and the front grounds at the RCMP detachment were damaged as a result of the incident.  None of the police officers were injured.

The man now faces charges of dangerous driving, assault of a peace officer, flight from police and assault with a weapon.
