Your marketing minute: Entrepreneur, employee, or professional?

Are you an entrepreneur, employee, or professional? Who works harder? Who earns more?

According to Stats Canada in 2000, 33.4 per cent of Canadians who were self-employed worked over 50 hours a week.

In 2004, 43 per cent of self-employed men worked over 50 hours per week compared to 22 per cent of self-employed women. By 2010, only 26.3 per cent of the self-employed worked over 50 hours per week. Self employed men on average work 40 to 50 hours a week. Women work 30 to 40.

One reason suggested for fewer women than men working longer hours is that women are more likely to work part-time than men. One reason suggested for the reduction over the ten year period in the number of people working 50+ hours is that, perhaps, people are moving toward a more balanced life-style. The study did not report the number of people who are working for two or more employers.

Employees, on the other hand, who work more than 50 hours in a week, number less than 10 per cent of the work force. Over three times as many men as women work the longer hours.

According to “2011 Wealth,” some higher paying jobs include Dental assistant jobs, Air Traffic Controllers, Professors, Sports Coach, Athlete, Airline Pilots, Certified Public Accountants, and Telemarketing Jobs. The Highest Paying Jobs in the World?  Employees that make the most money include CEOs, surgeons, pharmacists, software engineers and lawyers. Salaries range from $70,000 to $400,000 per year.

There is no annual income ceiling for entrepreneurs.
