On Thursday, several Alberta law enforcement units converged on a home and business in Innisfail after an extensive investigation lead officers to believe a significant drug operation was being run in the central Alberta town.
The investigation of the operation was a joint effort of many policing forces: the Innisfail RCMP detachment along with two Calgary-based ALERT Teams, Safer Communities and Neighbours and Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit all worked on the investigation.
When it came time to execute the search warrant and enter the home, the Red Deer and Edmonton RCMP Emergency Response Team took over the operation. Finally, the home was searched by Innisfail Detachment members as well as ALERT members and Innisfail Traffic Services.
The searches were conducted on a local business, a single residence and two vehicles. Police found and seized a significant amount of illegal drugs including cocaine. Also, police found cash and a .45 caliber semi-automatic hand gun with ammunition.
Two adult men from Innisfail were arrested at the business and face several related charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking and firearms offences. The owners of the business are still at large and will likely be facing charges when they are located.
The Canadian navy is leading a multi-nation exercise, dubbed Operation Nanook, in the Arctic as part of a "sovereignty exercise" throughout most of August.
