GPS technology helps police find woman in distress

| August 15, 2011 | 0 Comments

9-1-1 technology and G.P.S. tracking enabled the Peace Regional RCMP to locate a woman who made a 9-1-1 call to operators, but her call was disconnected and her phone broken in half by a man who was allegedly assaulting her.

The woman’s distress call was received by operators at the Peace Regional RCMP call centre at approximately 11:42 a.m.  She was explaining to the operator her emergency situation when the operator heard background noises and buttons being pressed on her cell phone.  The call then went dead; the woman did not have the time to tell the operator where she was calling from.

Police work and technology merged at this point.  Telus tracked the cell phone’s global positioning system co-ordinates to the town of Grimshaw which sent investigators on the trail of the woman.  Members from Peace Regional RCMP, Red Earth Creek, Fairview and High River RCMP as well as Police Dog Services attempted to find the woman in the vast Peace Region throughout the afternoon.

At about 5 p.m., RCMP officers found the woman who was unharmed, along with accused, Dennis James Laboucan, 32, of Little Buffalo in Marten Lake.

Laboucan has been charged with one count of assault against the female victim and one count of mischief to property under $5,000 for breaking the victim’s phone in half while she was attempting to talk to the 9-1-1 operator.

Laboucan’s first court appearance will be Monday August 15 at Peace River court.
