If you want to save money and water this summer, the City has one piece of advice: Do Nothing.
Amy Ross, Pubic Program Coordinator with the City of Calgary says that during the warmer summer months, outdoor watering can result in a 50 per cent increase in demand for water. She adds that by following a few simple conservation tips at home you can save yourself both time and money, plus you help reduce the strain we put on our rivers and water treatment plants.
A healthy yard only needs one inch of water per week, including rainfall. It is important for Calgarians to know when not to water your lawn as it can be an easy way to reduce water usage at home.
“As a general rule of thumb, every time you reduce your outdoor watering time by 15 minutes you can save about one dollar on your monthly water bill,“ says Amy Ross, “Over the course of a month your water savings can really add up.”
Ross is urging Calgarians to take the pledge to ‘Do Nothing’ to save water this summer. Remember to Do Nothing when it’s raining, has recently rained or is forecast to rain. During the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. don’t water the lawn as that is the hottest time of the day and the water will just evaporate and not do your lawn and garden any good anyway. If it is windy, don’t water the lawn as the wind will just blow the water away from where it is intended to go.
Visit www.facebook.com/RethinkWaterCalgary and make the commitment. Those who complete the Do Nothing pledge before August 15, 2011 will also be entered to win a prize package.
