Gleichen RCMP searching for Bow River drowning victim
Gleichen RCMP fear a young man who was swimming with friends in the Bow River east of Calgary may have drowned in the river on Friday afternoon.
Gleichen RCMP were called to an area around the Siksika First Nations concerning a report of a young man being swept away by the river at just before 4:30 p.m. on Friday. When police and EMS arrived at the scene they found a group of young adults had been swimming in the Bow when a strong undercurrent swept away one of the swimmers. People at the scene tried to rescue the man but they couldn’t help him.
The man is described as a Native man, 22 years old. He was wearing a green t-shirt and blue shorts. A search for the missing man is still underway with an RCMP boat and helicopter working alongside a fire rescue boat from the Siksika First Nations.
The name of the man is not being released at this time. It is unknown if alcohol played a factor in this incident.
